hee hee.... funny hor? much more of a tongue-twister... also a brain twister. :P here's the actual meaning (courtesy of wikipedia):

In a stone den was a poet Shi, who loved to eat lions, and decided to eat ten.
He often went to the market to look for lions.
One day at ten o'clock, ten lions just arrived at the market.
At that time, Shi just arrived at the market too.
Seeing those ten lions, he killed them with arrows.
He brought the corpses of the ten lions to the stone den.
The stone den was damp. He asked his servants to wipe it.
After the stone den was wiped, he tried to eat those ten lions.
When he ate, he realized that those ten lions were in fact ten stone lion corpses.
Try to explain this.

makes more sense in english. :P some guy wrote this to prove a point.

nike

as i was informing some people over the cny weekend, the original nike happens to be the greek goddess of victory...

oh, and i learnt her name was originally pronounced as NEE-keh.

the most famous image of nike is a headless, armless statue known as the "winged victory of samothrace".

and this is the modern nike we worship...

what if the two are put together?

nike, winged goddess of victory, wearing nike sneakers

nike, the winged goddess of victory,
wearing niketm sneakers!

eye care

in the past 3 months i realised that i'm developing eye bags! wah... signs of aging appear very suddenly one leh. :P

since the internet is a resource bank, i turned to it for help on treatment of this problem...

sites dealing with eyes:
- causes of eye bags
- an eye-q test
- "a system of scientific eye training"

the real eye bag

also have to learn to deal with aging right? "grow old gracefully, not pathetically".

Review: Clutch of Constables by Ngaio Marsh

just before the new year set in, i went to borrow a few books to read over the long weekend. ngaio marsh is a new author to me, so i thought i'd read one of her books, 'cos apparently some magazine in new york seems to rate her highly.

"It's time to start comparing Christie to Marsh instead of the other way around." --New York magazine

a short summary was also provided:

"Celebrated painter Troy Alleyn, aboard the Zodiac on a cruise of the English waterways, finds a colorful constellation of personalities on its passengers list. Plus one who missed the boat-found murdered in London. Her letters to her husband, Superintendent Roderick Alleyn, relate a string of incidents-capped by a grisly drowning-that convince him that one of the ship's company is a world-class art forger on the run. But can he unmask this master of disguise in time to save another life-possibly Troy's?"

according to my understanding, the protagonist in most of her books is roderick alleyn, but i just happened to pick the book in which his wife is personally involved. although he does come in at the last part to send her away, solve the case and take the glory. (bleah.)

hope

the narrative goes back and forth between roderick, who's lecturing on this case on hind-sight, and troy (his wife), who's on a tour. among her tourmates are some of the most highly-ranked criminals on the international scene... but she doesn't know who's who, or why she feels uneasy about certain things. she sends her husband letters though, so he's updated about what's happening on the boat.

it's pretty easy reading, no big words, small print or over-lengthy description. the pace is good as well. unfortunately, all the clues don't appear until roderick appears on the scene at the end. plus, there are a handful of bad guys (not just one) and outsiders (not from the tour) who're helping things along. so there's really no way of knowing who's who or how things happened until the end of the book.

haiz...

i think i'll have to read more of her books before i can confirm if this is the way she usually writes. but for now i'll still compare marsh to agatha christie.

valentine's

here's a special post on valentine's dedicated to my current favourite screen couple...

Grissom and Sara from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation!

there's an acronym for this: GSR -- grissom-sara-romance. GSR is also an acronym for gunshot residue, a term often used on the show. (like in "his hands tested positive for GSR" - meaning the guy handled or fired a gun recently.)

hope

and here they are again, from the final episode of season 6...

so hot!

no one had any idea that they had already taken things so far in their relationship... although some subtle hints were dropped here and there. more to look forward to this season? :D

francis s. collin's interview in nat geo

another eminent scientist stands to be counted as a Christ-believer.

also, a voice in the wilderness between the camps of evolution and creationism... must it really be either/or? evolution vs. creationism? didn't galileo face the same problems? but even christians today would agree that the earth orbits the sun, without the fact threatening their faith.

hope

being someone who works in the area of developmental biology and a christian, i agree that there ought to be a way of reconciling the 2 camps of thought. there is a creator God (the big bang theory is commonly accepted), and evolution has been a practical theory to explain certain phenomena (like fossil records, morphological similarities, developmental similarities and genetic conservation). i'm not likely to discover it though... :P but the truth is out there! or in us.

to live is Christ

i learned how to sing this song in my first lesson at a guitar course this year. it's a fast & high worship song... i like it for its lyrics and its tune. it's been on autoplay in my head these past few weeks...
hope

Artist: Youth Alive
Song: To Live Is Christ

Verse:
I made a vow
My life will always honour Christ
Whether I live or die

I belong to Him
He bore my sin
I owe this life to my saving King

Pre-chorus:
Hallelujah, I am not my own
You are in control
Hallelujah

Chorus:
For me to live is Christ
And to die is gain
No matter what price I pay
I choose to give this life away

Bridge:
Only by the cross I am saved

hope

umm. powerful song... and very meaningful for me.

"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." - Philippians 1:21

birthdays

i realise i like celebrating birthdays a lot! especially planning for surprises. perhaps its the effort of keeping everything under wraps until it's time to be revealed. haiz... but haven't had a successful surprise yet. :P

discovered this after the 4th or 5th birthday party this year. birthdays give me a rush.
hope shines thru
i created this blog to log some thoughts and experiences. the little logo above represents what i believe... that hope shines through the thick cloud of experiences we have. very optimistic hor? hee...

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
- Romans 5:5
